Dr. Phil on Fulfilling Robin's Needs
Have the attitude that your children join your marriage. We didn't stop being friends and lovers because we started being a mother and father. And now we're empty nesters; thank God we didn't look up after 27 years and go, Oh, I remember you. We kept the relationship alive along the way by continuing to date, continuing to go on trips, and being invested in each other.
Honor the four most important minutes of the day. The moment when you first see your partner, whether it's in the morning or at the end of the day, dictates with great accuracy how the rest of your time together is going to go. Even if you've got a bill that you need to discuss, or if Bobby set Susie on fire again in the sandbox, if you make that first four minutes How was your day, come sit down for a second, and connect on a personal level, it makes a huge difference. We even joke about it. If Robin wants to tell me something that frustrated her, I'll come home and she'll say, "Okay, tell me when four minutes are up, buddy, 'cause then I gotta talk."
